Four Easy Ways for Men to Stay Healthy

Living a healthier lifestyle doesn’t mean you have to eat only salad and fill your house with gimmicky workout equipment. A few simple- and manageable- lifestyle adaptations can make a big difference in your health and happiness.

Sunscreen should have an SPF of 15 or higher to protect your skin from damage. Remember to reapply every two hours, or after swimming, toweling off or excessive sweating.

You already know that men face an increased risk for certain diseases like heart disease and colon cancer. You also know that smoking is not good for your health, and maintaining a healthy weight is important in preventing many chronic illnesses. However, there are a few other obvious- yet often overlooked- things you can do to stay healthy.

1. Manage the conditions you already have
It sounds like a no brainer, but how many of us forget to take our blood pressure medicine or check our blood sugar like we’re supposed to? It’s important to follow your doctor’s treatment recommendations for your specific condition to stay healthy and active. Consider trying a medication planner service if you have trouble remembering to take your medications.

2. Manage your stress level
We all have moments at home and at work that are less than serene. However, if you constantly feel on edge or under attack, your physical health can suffer. Take steps to reduce your stress level- take a walk to calm down, spend more time with friends and family or seek counseling if you need someone to talk to.

3. Protect yourself from the sun
There’s nothing like basking in the sun on a warm summer’s day… until you get a blistering sunburn. Enjoy the sun safely by wearing sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. 4. Limit alcohol
Try to hold back that groan- we’re not saying you have to give it up completely! Moderation is the key. For men, two alcoholic beverages (12 ounces beer, 8 ounces of malt liquor or 1.5 ounces of spirits) each day is considered acceptable. Excessive alcohol use can raise your blood pressure and can increase your risk of developing colon, lung, kidney or liver cancer.

Many diseases (including forms of heart disease, cancer and stroke) can be avoided if you make simple lifestyle changes to protect your health. If you aren’t proactive, you may have to deal with serious health consequences down the road.
